So having embarked on this sustainable fashion journey, there’s been many things to think of, fret over and look into. Production methods, the cradle to cradle thoughts and material forages. Whether to sign up for the Made-By button or to like the idea of the the Luxury Eco Stamp.
There is a wealth of information all around the internet in English, so searching around helps though I guess things are too early, at least certainly in Asia to feel the support system set up. Especially in hearing the disgruntled disbelief of local material suppliers over why we bother with sustainable. Runs and rummages through massive tradeshows and very long Google Reader lists have helped.
Things that have been of particular asset would be the Fashion Futures info, the Estetica 18 questions and the Source4Style material lineup. But these things are stock standard of beginning this new kind of a journey so since this is the thoughts section I’m going step away from the ones and twos to indulge in something perhaps more comparatively abstract.
The journey has brought knowledge and excitement over the possible and current innovations rolling around in terms of the fashion industry – or at least the potential and commentary of it’s parts. Things like The Uniform Project, to instigate the thought on the disposability of our wardrobes make good cultural commentary; those such as the intriguing current Mechanical Couture exhibition featuring 3D printed fashion make technology speak on an exploratory artistic level; then there’s the whole field of harnessing one’s kinetic energy through clothing to power devices, and imagination follows.
For just a few.
Then there’s the perhaps not as artistically bent but ever assertable material discoveries like those harvested from coffee grinds and seaweed; or the scrap textile portal at Recycle Match; or the waterless clothes wash sans energy imagineering.
It has been an incredible learning experience, but there is certainly something lacking when you feel wont of a physical community of like-situationed folk to draw from. Any one out there?
