Earth Music

Antarctica and Uppsala give us earth-made music.

DJ Spooky went to Antarctica, recorded the sounds of ice melting and shifting, and came back with Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica. Composed to be played by a string ensemble, Spooky will live edit and loop the ensemble's sounds with recorded samples as video footage of Antarctic exploration pans out projected around them.

Then Uppsala, Sweden, where the Volt Music Festival is playing out. There's a huge turntable contraption called Terrafone, that when dragged across the earth surrounding it, plays like a big gravelley vinyl. They say it sounds like plowed earth, a rock gargling and an avalanche or a mountain crumbling...more on that here.

HOW COULD WE NOT PAY TRIBUTE TO THE KING

My daughters pet fish, ironically called Michael Jackson died one week before the real one did. A sign?

There's BAD, Beat it, Thriller, Billie Jean, Heal the world and my all time fav -  PYT. Now how about Earth song?

Back in 1996 when environmental issues were hardly a concern, Michael Jackson released this track. Among the visuals -deforestation, pollution, war and overfishing.

This is what he has to say - "For me, this is Earth’s Song, because I think nature is trying so hard to compensate for man’s mismanagement of the Earth. And with the ecological unbalance going on, and a lot of the problems in the environment, I think earth feels the pain, and she has wounds, and it’s about some of the joys of the planet as well."

There will never be anyone else like Michael Jackson. Too many copycats with hardly enough talent. You will be greatly missed.
