GARBAGE CITY

Behold Mokattam, literally known as "The Garbage City".

Before 2003, the Zabbaleen a community of Coptic Christians collected rubbish from the residents of cairo and sorted through their trash to reuse and recycle 80-90 percent of it. An incredible amount of waste recycling. Since the privatization of waste management their livelihoods have been threatened. They say when u walk down the streets of Mokattam you see rows and rows of rooms with mountain piles of rubbish while men, women and children are kneeling, crouching and sorting through it to be resold.

Garbage dreams - a feature film documentary featuring the lives of 2 boys struggling to make a living in the city. Already nominated at the Academy awards this film has also won numerous film awards.

TAPPED

Tapped- The Movie. Watch the trailer for a doco about the bottled water industry here.

Just a quick fact so you reconsider buying bottled water - Something to jolt you back to your senses on this lovely Monday morning.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is roughly the size of the state of Texas and floating around containing 3.5 million tons of trash. If you didn't know, plastic also takes 700 years to biodegrade. Think about it and do better, earthlings :-)

No Impact Man

Jeff Beaven lived a zero waste lifestyle for a year and filmed it. In an experiment involving eating produce from within 250 miles, not a scrap of electrical lighting, absolutely no toilet paper and the full participation of his little daughter and Manhattanite wife.

And as Treehugger tells us, he’s not alone, there are collectives of non-shoppers in San Fransisco (sfcompact.blogspot.com) and people who eat from within 100 mile radiuses of their home (100milediet.org).

His year-long plan here.

Sexy Bitches Like It Raw

I always become hesitant at the mention of Raw Food. The joy of fired up, flaming, caramelised, sautéed, grilled…m… food is what has always gotten me going.

But anyone who names their podcast ‘Sexy Bitches Like It Raw’ are worth the attention. :).

Uncooked, unprocessed, organic foods. I get the sustainability factor, the health benefits…but for now I’m happy to just watch hosts Mystique and Amae go at it.

Green Porno

I'm a big big fan of Isabella Rossellini the whale.

Blue Velvet was one thing, but now her Green Porno documentary series with the Sundance Channel brings big smiles.

Rossellini dons fly suits, whale suits, barnacle hats - and mates. It's educational.

Watch the proceedings at Green Porno.
