The Seedbomb Candy Machine

There's lots of seedbombs around, but this time Greenaid is bringing it to us in coin operated candy machine form. Creators Kim Karlsrud and Daniel Phillips inherited a couple of these machines from Daniel's Father, and reflecting off their involvement with the LA Guerilla Gardeners, they dreamt up these seedbomb vending machines.

They're looking to partner up with botanical gardens and skate shops but if you approach them here they'll help you think up a strategic neighbourhood intervention plan according to the ecologies of your area and stock you up with all the supply you need to support the initiative.

Naked Month

Naked Retreats, Greenovate, Gecko and Shanghai Roots and Shoots get together for Naked Green Initiative month.

If you're in Shanghai and hadn't heard of Naked Retreats yet, here's a good time to perk up. Naked are a respite from city life up in the Moganshan hills. Beautiful in many ways, they search for a sustainable way of existence and for the month of March are hooking up with all the above for talks, hikes, workshops and an eco-design competition with the Raffles Design Institute.

Packages for families, schools, companies and individuals starting 12th March here.

Guerilla Gardening Gaming

General Brauhaus the dictator has banned all trees and flowers, but Ms Molly Greenthumb the guerilla gardening leader plants around town, attracting people to them to support the tree/flower cause.

Cheese. But sweet to see guerilla gardening and the philosophy behind it making it into game form. Guerilla Gardening: Seeds of Revolution, yes, really. Thanks GOOD.

For some real-life guerilla gardening of your own check Seedbom, and to go the more communal route, Battale Verde.

SEEDBOM

I rarely turn to Etsy for design influences, but I could not help by posting this Seedbom. Guerilla gardening must have. Throw it, pot it, drop it, grow it.

Made of recycled stuff and grows native wildflowers and easy to grow flower varieties.

FEEDING THE 5000

The good guys at Feeding the 5000 show us how much food waste is happening and what we could actually do with it at Trafalgar Square on the 16th Dec. Farms, packers and markets have donated food that are cosmetically imperfect yet still very edible to give away to the public. Smoothies prepared from surplus fruits powered by bicycles too! Raising awareness in the UK on how much food wastage is happening by individuals and retailers, and how that food could be channelled to starving others.

COKE IN COPENHAGEN

Fuelling debate on whether a multinational like Coke should be teaming up with Hopenhagen's call for climate change during COP15. These posters were seen all over town with its creative advertising and claims of HOPE. Although their bottles are made from 30% plant based materials and the remaining 70% STILL plastic. I say greenwashing.

GARBAGE CITY

Behold Mokattam, literally known as "The Garbage City".

Before 2003, the Zabbaleen a community of Coptic Christians collected rubbish from the residents of cairo and sorted through their trash to reuse and recycle 80-90 percent of it. An incredible amount of waste recycling. Since the privatization of waste management their livelihoods have been threatened. They say when u walk down the streets of Mokattam you see rows and rows of rooms with mountain piles of rubbish while men, women and children are kneeling, crouching and sorting through it to be resold.

Garbage dreams - a feature film documentary featuring the lives of 2 boys struggling to make a living in the city. Already nominated at the Academy awards this film has also won numerous film awards.

URBAN RICE SPACE

We usually think padi field. Urban farming Ginza style - rice, 2 ducks and a frog.
