Of Mice and Rides

The Greener Gadgets Competition sprouts a wireless cork mouse that needs no batteries, and a bicycle that charges up your iPhone with a 3 kilometre ride.

Corky the Mouse harvests the kinetic energy of your normal mouse movement use, no more batteries. You can vote for her here if you'd like. It would be interesting to see them applying the same logic to this...

And the RolgerGen, a nice lo-fi personal powerpack, check the specs here. Reminiscent of Future City Mobility and Hybrid2, though these guys are distinctly higher-fi.

PRINSTIK

This lil pocket printer can be plugged into your laptop and even your blackberry. Stores 20 pieces of paper, does not use printer cartridges and prints using thermal printing technology. Nicely designed, but not yet there in terms of concept. We still do need to use less paper. Good for flashing out of your jacket pocket!

ECSCUBE

So there are people creating sustainable micro-architecture here in Malaysia that is not too shabby. Enter the Ecscube.

We love the use of their green architecture + ULTRA energy. Solar panels power up 2 sockets for lighting and electrical appliances. Its made of reclaimed wood, modular and even very attractive. Pop by UKM to checkout their food kiosk and mini green store. Designed and created by the award winning Azimin Tazilan who brought you the breathing door (awarded in London) EcsPose and Ecstract.

Now, to get this on the streets. We wish him all the best.

The ATREEM, or automated tree-rental for emission encaging machine...

Taking a fairly doom and gloom tone, Designboom reveal the 'criticism of the carbon trading system and destruction of society' that comes through with the ATREEM - in our light it's an awareness-raising instrument that as an exercise paths the way to highlight possible shifts of change.

ATREEM is attached to a tree by a tape measure that measures the girth of it's trunk, this calculates the growth and CO2 that has been absorbed. The user can then navigate and 'rent' the time the tree needs to offset carbon emissions of various activities, i.e. 10 minute train journey = 2 days, 10 hours of tree offsetting work.

A for-children format comes in the form of a tape measure, instead of numbers you get '1 hour on a flight', '2 days of breathing', etc.

More carbon offset possibilities with the Carbon Ration Books from the Ministry of Trying to Do Something.
