Naked Month

Naked Retreats, Greenovate, Gecko and Shanghai Roots and Shoots get together for Naked Green Initiative month.

If you're in Shanghai and hadn't heard of Naked Retreats yet, here's a good time to perk up. Naked are a respite from city life up in the Moganshan hills. Beautiful in many ways, they search for a sustainable way of existence and for the month of March are hooking up with all the above for talks, hikes, workshops and an eco-design competition with the Raffles Design Institute.

Packages for families, schools, companies and individuals starting 12th March here.

Guerilla Gardening Gaming

General Brauhaus the dictator has banned all trees and flowers, but Ms Molly Greenthumb the guerilla gardening leader plants around town, attracting people to them to support the tree/flower cause.

Cheese. But sweet to see guerilla gardening and the philosophy behind it making it into game form. Guerilla Gardening: Seeds of Revolution, yes, really. Thanks GOOD.

For some real-life guerilla gardening of your own check Seedbom, and to go the more communal route, Battale Verde.

Plastiki

12,000 plastic bottles have been put together and now are on sail across the Pacific.

Plastiki is an upcycled plastic boat that started it's journey in San Fransisco and now makes it's way across the ocean to Australia. Stopping off at islands along the way, the crew on board look to learn and highlight environmental issues facing the Pacific islands with a mission to open eyes to re-thinking waste and it's possibilities as a resource.

High on cradle-to-cradle thinking, Plastiki's founder David de Rothschild was alarmed by the garbage patch story and got inspired to create an expedition to push understanding on the waste we produce and the innovation that is necessary to close the cycle.

Follow their journey here.

Less Is The New More

A sweet mini-site with some fairly obvious though worth remembering bits on sustainable life, by the Plastiki people.

Plastiki? That's up next...

SEEDBOM

I rarely turn to Etsy for design influences, but I could not help by posting this Seedbom. Guerilla gardening must have. Throw it, pot it, drop it, grow it.

Made of recycled stuff and grows native wildflowers and easy to grow flower varieties.

TRAINED AMUSEMENT

An interactive public space for locals in Lima, Peru. Rides made from a scrapped electrical train project. The guys at Basurama have worked on many installations to turn public spaces into happy places.

Of Mice and Rides

The Greener Gadgets Competition sprouts a wireless cork mouse that needs no batteries, and a bicycle that charges up your iPhone with a 3 kilometre ride.

Corky the Mouse harvests the kinetic energy of your normal mouse movement use, no more batteries. You can vote for her here if you'd like. It would be interesting to see them applying the same logic to this...

And the RolgerGen, a nice lo-fi personal powerpack, check the specs here. Reminiscent of Future City Mobility and Hybrid2, though these guys are distinctly higher-fi.

PRINSTIK

This lil pocket printer can be plugged into your laptop and even your blackberry. Stores 20 pieces of paper, does not use printer cartridges and prints using thermal printing technology. Nicely designed, but not yet there in terms of concept. We still do need to use less paper. Good for flashing out of your jacket pocket!
